Here's What People Are Saying About Merritt!

“Like he promised, Merritt prioritized the St. Lucie River.”

The single greatest threat facing my family's quality of life in the City of Stuart is another toxic Lake Okeechobee discharge. Toxic blue green algae. Waterways closed for recreational use. People sick. Dogs dying.

We endured the Lost Summer of 2013, then again we had toxic discharges in 2016 prompting a “no-touch” river advisory. Yet, we still didn't have political will at the Stuart City Council to make fixing the water a priority. And then, not surprisingly, we got slammed with another toxic discharge in 2018.

In the wake of these environmental and economic disasters Merritt Matheson ran for City Commission, committing to me and other river advocates, that he would do all he could to stop future discharges and prioritize the river.

Merritt was elected in 2018 and kept his word. I personally sat in on calls he made to the Army Corps of Engineers, one in which he floated the idea of a possible lawsuit. He led the City's involvement during the years of public workshopping of the new Lake Okeechobee Management Plan (LOSOM). And he contributed to years of River Coalition meetings where I attended as a board member.

Like he promised, Merritt prioritized the St. Lucie River when he was a Stuart commissioner and he assures me that if elected, he will again.

I have confidence in Merritt, and my dog Lucie, thanks him for his efforts.

“I can personally vouch for his integrity, experience and steady leadership.”

I served as a Martin County Commissioner while Merritt served on the Stuart City Commission, including as Mayor. During that time, we worked together on several important initiatives, including Martin County Forever.

I can personally vouch for his integrity, experience and steady leadership. Merritt has always put our community first, and I'm proud to endorse him.

“Merritt is the best candidate to keep our rivers clean.”

Merritt is one of the great leaders of the river movement, and I've seen firsthand what he can do.

He has been a critical bridge between our community and the Army Corps of Engineers and the South Florida Water Management District. That kind of relationship building is rare.

Merritt is the best candidate to keep our rivers clean and keep our fight going.

“Leads with intelligence and a steady hand.”

When I was president/CEO of Martin Health System, I became involved in water quality issues during the blue-green algae blooms, when patients with respiratory problems were coming to the ER.

Through that work, I learned firsthand how passionate and knowledgeable Merritt is about our rivers and water quality.

I also observed his leadership while he served the city. He understands our community, knows how city government works, and leads with intelligence and a steady hand. Merritt has my full support.

When Merritt served as a Stuart commissioner, he wasn't afraid to make tough decisions. He worked with fellow commissioners and applicants to make projects better.

“Merritt Matheson is a real force, and we ought to put that to work for Stuart.”

I met Merritt at a Rivers Coalition meeting and saw right away that he was articulate, informed, effective, and a real people person.

Then we worked together on the Martin County Forever project, getting the word out, and that was a success.

“I know he'll always put Stuart's best interests first.”

I've known the Matheson family my whole life. Their roots in Martin County run deep. Merritt's great-uncle Bill moved here in the 1930s and owned Crane Creek Ranch, and his father, Bob, was a longtime attorney and committed conservationist.

I've watched Merritt carry on that legacy, and I know he'll always put Stuart's best interests first.
